What is battery rejuvenation?

Battery rejuvenation is a controlled electrochemical process that dissolves the hardened lead sulphate crystals which build up on a lead-acid battery's plates over time. Removing that sulphation restores the plates' ability to hold and deliver charge, returning much of the battery's original capacity without replacing it.

Sulphation is the single largest cause of premature lead-acid battery failure. It begins whenever a battery sits partially discharged, which in practice means almost always. Rejuvenation targets that specific failure mode — it does not repair physical damage.

How does battery rejuvenation work?

Every battery entering a ReStore service centre goes through the same four stages. The diagnostic comes first, because not every battery is worth treating.

  1. Step 1

    Diagnose

    Capacity, voltage under load and internal resistance are measured to establish state of health and confirm the battery is a viable candidate.

  2. Step 2

    Desulphate

    High-frequency pulses break down the crystalline lead sulphate bonded to the plates, freeing active material back into the electrolyte.

  3. Step 3

    Recondition

    Controlled boost charging and electrolyte correction rebalance the cells, supported where appropriate by our Elixir additive.

  4. Step 4

    Verify

    A post-treatment capacity test confirms recovered performance. Batteries that fail verification are routed to recycling, not resold.

India's Battery Waste Management Rules 2022, notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on 22 August 2022, apply directly to entities that refurbish used batteries. Refurbishers must register with the Central Pollution Control Board, and operating without registration can attract environmental compensation under the polluter pays principle.

For partners, this matters commercially as well as legally. A registered, compliant refurbishment operation can serve enterprise and government contracts that an informal workshop cannot bid for at all.

What is battery rejuvenation?

Which batteries can be rejuvenated?

Most lead-acid chemistries respond to rejuvenation, including flooded, tubular, VRLA, AGM and gel batteries used in inverters, UPS systems, solar storage, telecom towers, forklifts and vehicles. Batteries with physical damage such as a cracked case, buckled plates or an internal short cannot be recovered and are routed to recycling instead.

How much extra life does rejuvenation add to a battery?

Results depend on the battery's age, chemistry and how badly it has been sulphated. ReStore Life reports life extension of up to four times through restoration. A diagnostic test measures capacity and internal resistance before treatment, so the likely outcome is known before any work is committed.
